What is Epilepsy and How to Help The Patient in Case of Seizures?: Epilepsy is a mental illness in which the brain suddenly deviates from its normal activity, causing the patient to tremble and fall unconscious.
ARY News Morning Show Bakhbar Sawira was attended by Fauzia Siddiqui, President of Epilepsy Foundation Pakistan, and a neurologist who spoke about the disease. Fauzia Siddiqui said that epilepsy is a treatable disease.
“Our body is like a machine and the brain is its motherboard with various connections,” he said.
Fauzia Siddiqui said that it is just like an electric switchboard, in which if a single current goes from one side to the other, the said connection starts to be extinguished, similarly, if the connection of the brain also goes to one side, then the body connected to it.
The organ begins to jerk, after which the body’s automatic defense system shuts it down, after which the patient becomes unconscious.
He said that the rate of epilepsy in Pakistan and India is 1 or 2% of the total population while it is 0.5% in western countries. In Pakistan, especially children are suffering from epilepsy.
Explaining the reason, Dr. Fauzia said that mothers are not taken care of during pregnancy, their diet and health should be taken care of.
Do not take any medicine without consulting a doctor if there is any slight deterioration during pregnancy as it affects the brain of the developing baby in the abdomen and changes the structure of the brain.
In addition, if the baby does not receive oxygen immediately after birth, the brain can still suffer from epilepsy.
Dr. Fauzia also talked about many myths related to epilepsy. He said that it is considered to be a sign of ghosts, phantoms, or demons, it is just like a treatable disease like fever or blood pressure.
Also, if you have an epileptic seizure, do not put a cloth over the patient’s mouth.
In such cases, loosen the scarf or tie around his neck, remove the sharp objects around him so that he is not injured, and Lay the bill so that the tongue does not get into the throat.
He said that stuffing cloth in the mouth can cause shortness of breath and death of the patient.
An epileptic seizure lasts 2 to 3 minutes.
Allow this time to pass and do not try to stop it. After 2 to 3 minutes of seizures, the patient becomes unconscious. If not, he should be rushed to the hospital emergency room.
Dr. Fauzia added that patients with epilepsy should carry the medication prescribed by the doctor and wear a bandage on their hand that reads about their illness and is told that the medication they have in case of a seizure.
