This meant that the team could use fiber optics to record how active brain cells become when mice eat or drink under different experimental conditions.
When rats are thirsty, a certain part of their brain, the SFO, becomes very active. As soon as they drink water, the activity of this part slows down.
In the same way, when rats eat, the ‘circuit of thirst’ becomes clear, although by that time no change has taken place in their blood.
SFO cells appear to be affected by conditions in rats’ mouths.
Dr. Knight told the BBC: “This activity goes up and down very fast after receiving signals from inside the mouth during eating and drinking.
“Even more unusual is the effect of temperature,” he said.
“Coldwater closes the cells faster. On the contrary, we have even noticed that cooling the mouths of rats without drinking water reduces the activity of thirst cells.
“Temperature is also a signal to which they react.”
